Speaker Meeting Report- The Halifax Spinning Mill

On the 8th April 2025 the Bridlington and District Civic Society were treated to a fascinating talk and demonstration by Paul Crookes of the Halifax Spinning Mill.

Paul has 40 years experience in the textile industry and runs the Halifax Spinning Mill, currently located on the Carnaby Industrial Estate, Lancaster Road, near Bridlington. He shared with us his story from working as a carding apprentice to a mill manager.

Paul brought along a whole array of British materials that his specialist mill works with, including various fleeces and the different yarn products. He also demonstrated some yarn spinning on a drop spindle, an ancient technique that has its origins in the Neolithic period.

We were delighted for this opportunity to handle all the different varieties of wools that the Halifax Spinning Mill uses for its products. For the knitters in the audience this was particularly exciting!

The Bridlington and District Civic Society thank Paul for sharing his story and expertise, and for bringing along his wonderful natural products!
