Civil Society- Visit to Bridlington Harbour

The Bridlington and District Civic Society spent a wonderful morning listening to a talk by Harbour Master Lawrence Porter, followed by a tour of the harbour with the Chairman of the Harbour Commissioners, Neil Orum.

Bridlington is a Trust Port and the largest shellfish port in Europe. Sadly, almost all of what is caught is shipped to the continent, with only crabs sold locally. Our harbour, like many others across the country, is in need of significant investment, which unfortunately is not forthcoming. For anyone looking for a worthwhile cause to bequeath to, the harbour would be immensely deserving. The weather was fantastic- very sunny and warm- the very best conditions for a harbour meander!

It was disappointing to hear that the work carried out by Yorkshire Water at a cost of approximately £40 million around 2012 will not deliver the clear water that had been expected. The plans for the new sewage system show the outfall pipe as being 1.2 kilometres from the shore, but in reality it is only 600 metres offshore.

Overall the Civic Society had a brilliant day learning more about the historic harbour that's right on our doorstep, and we even got to admire the latest art mural by Sam Porter (Mural Minded) which we are sure will attract many admirers and further promote our harbour as a tourist destination!

The Bridlington and District Civic Society thank Lawrence Porter and Neil Orum for their time and interesting talks!
