Speaker Meeting Report: Stephen Carvill on his Work

Our latest Bridlington & District Civic Society talk welcomed Bridlington’s own artist and sculptor, Stephen Carvill whose creativity has shaped some of the town’s most recognisable landmarks.

The Chairman opening Stephen's talk.

It was a captivating evening as Stephen shared the story of his artistic journey. He spoke about where he began, the influences that sparked his imagination, and the path that eventually led him to create iconic pieces such as The Priory sculptures, The Gansey Girl on Bridlington's pier, and The Barrow Boy at the railway station. Hearing directly from the artist brought new depth to works many of us pass every day without fully appreciating the thought, craft, and passion behind them.

Stephen talks about his Gansey Girl sculpture.

He then took us behind the scenes of his creative process. With a series of photographs, Stephen guided us through each stage of a project, from the first spark of inspiration, to material choices, to the collaboration with local people and organisations. He spoke candidly about the challenges he has faced along the way, and the persistence needed to transform an idea into a finished piece of public art. It was fascinating to see just how much happens before a sculpture ever meets the public eye.

To close the evening, Stephen gave us an exciting glimpse of what might be next for Bridlington: a jackdaw sculpture for the historic Old Town.

The Society thanks Stephen for providing this inspiring talk. Stephen’s humour and obvious passion for his craft held the audience spellbound throughout. It was a pleasure to learn more about the artist behind so many of the treasures in our town, and to look forward to the works still to come.
